Brasilia will host the first of a series of Biennials of Poetry, which will be integrated to the activities of the 27th Brasilia Book Fair. The I International Biennial of Poetry in Brasilia (IBP), from September 3rd to 7th, 2008, will take place at the Conjunto Cultural da República at the National Museum and the National Library Brasília, with the participation of poets, critics and editors internationally known. It will include in the program many parallel activities, from recital sessions and conferences about poetry. The event will bring together new trends on contemporary Brazilian to international poetry in many ways: written, spoken, chanted, performed, digitalized and visualized.
The 1st IBP (International Biennial of Poetry in Brasilia) will be spread out to other areas of Brasilia, such as the rooms of the National Theater Claudio Santoro and elsewhere in the satellite cities, via a traveling poetry program.
The Biennial is being organized by the National Library of Brasilia and the Book Chamber of the DF (Federal District), with the help of the Secretary of Culture and other institutions from the local and also federal government of Brazil, the University of Brasilia, embassies and private sector.
Projects The following projects are under discussion for the Biennial’s program: poetic creation and reading workshop, visual poetry, children’s poetry, exhibition, “hanging” poems, big banners with poems, documentary’s exhibition, video clips, outside projections of poems around the museum, etc.
Many contests are being organized, such as young and children’s poetry, visual poetry and multimedia. Other activities are being planned to the 1st Biennial: seminars, talks and conferences, essay and critic sessions, simultaneous interpretations for participants, texts in the official language of the writer and screen projection of translated texts.
And a lot more… we will edit a book putting together all invited poets, release new works, promote the meeting of editors of books and magazines about poetry, as well as the editors of the electronic Brazilian magazines and poetry websites. We will also edit the collection Livro na Rua (“Book on the road”), by Thesaurus Editora, containing the invited authors and others. Narrated poetry and popular poetry of rappers and cordel and popular poetry chanters, besides the poetic and music recitals, will also take place in the event.
We are open to suggestions and contributions to this present program, even though it has been thought of by the organizing committee. Send them to bnb@sc.df.gov.br
